Does your list of new year’s resolutions say things like ‘get fit’ or ‘lose the Christmas overspill’? Can you even remember them all without consulting the list?
Last year I urged everyone not to lose sight of the most important thing amidst all the good intentions: make sure the primary goal is to enjoy your body.
I still think that’s just about the best resolution you can make, but this year I want to throw down another challenge…
Fuck the gym. Sod pointlessly pedaled hours on a bike that doesn’t move. Balls to lifting things you’re only lifting for the sake of loading bored muscles.
This year, instead of all that utter pointlessness, take on something new. Learn to kite surf, become proficient on the static trapeze, cycle across France, take on the skate park, earn some belts in Kung Fu, take up tap dancing.
Just because you’re a grown up doesn’t mean you have to stop learning new physical skills.
Yes, you’ll end up fitter, healthier, and slimmer – or whatever you were after – but you won’t have trashed hours of 2012 in the empty pursuit of a smaller arse.
So pick something that excites you. It doesn’t matter what it is, only that it doesn’t feel like a chore.
And remember: if you’re not having fun you’re not doing it right.
